Why Risky Marketing Strategies Work
Do you ever wonder why Martha Stewart was able to bounce back after spending jail time? How Kayne West is able to make a fool out of himself again and again yet continues to make more money? Why Michael Jackson’s death brought about massive record sales…to the point where his estate is debt free? And why when struggling actresses or singers pose for playboy then their careers skyrocket?
Risky marketing strategies work that’s why! But, why do risky marketing strategies work? Let’s take a look.
Risky vs Conservative
We will say “conservative marketing strategies” is like heading east in a grey car while “risky marketing strategies” is like heading west in a red car. When you are implementing “conservative marketing strategies” such as a television commercial with a photo shot of your store with the traditional voice over you are heading east in a grey car along with all of your other competition. You fit in. You are with the “in-crowd.” You are safe.
However, when you shoot that same television commercial with a half-naked woman making sexual references or a controversy about God all of a sudden you are heading due west in a red car!
Sex Sells
You get my point, right? When you do something risky or idiotic or out of the blue or contraversial then you will get noticed because most people are not willing to go against the grain. But, when your marketing strategies are risky the media will talk, churches will ban it, radio stations will call on experts to talk about its effect, and local people will gossip…but in the marketing world that is a really good thing! You want people to talk about you! You want people to gossip about you!
Do you know why?
Thoughts Create Action
Because people will then check you out! They will youtube your videos. They will visit your store. Why will they do these things? Because you are in their thoughts. And what we think about, we bring about.
And when they purchase your product they might find that they like your service. Then they will come to your defense and then you will establish customer loyalty and then you will be a success. Your risky marketing strategy will bring you revenue.
Think Mac vs. PC
Think BMW vs Mercedes
Loyal customers cause controversy. And that is o.k. In fact controversy is a great marketing strategy and is the most inexpensive way to advertise your business.

Hey Steven
Absolutely agree with what you’ve written.
In this day of technology, information has the opportunity to move virally at such a frantic pace and in real-time.
With social media channels, and especially when something is controversial it has a greater chance of having massive views, clicks, retweets, blogged about, gossiped, imitated or even parodied in spoof videos. When that something, an event or person evokes ‘emotion’ in another person, it is highly likely that person will get in ‘motion’ and take some form of action with the information.
With that in mind, and if you can add 2 + 2 and get 5 you can really get some momentum on your ideas.
Thanks
Kieran
