Television marketing is a thing of the past. In fact it sucks. Here are 9 different secrets why you should not market your business through a television commercial:

  1. 30 Second Commercials – You pay $3,000 and you get one 30 second commercial per day for a month. The image of your business is only in front of your audience for 30 seconds most of which they are zoned out because it is a commercial.
  2. Customers Are Not Watching – What do you do when a commercial comes on? You go to the bathroom, you get a refill on your soda or you get something to eat. You do not sit there and watch commercials…unless you are watching the Superbowl.
  3. Tivo – Now days people do not even have to watch advertisements they simply Tivo their favorite episodes (which are not your commercials) and fast forward through everything else.
  4. There are a Million Channels – There are a million channels now and as soon as one shows an ad your audience switches to Sportscenter to see yesterday’s highlights.
  5. Your Brainwaves Slow Down – Studies have shown that your brainwaves are slower when you are watching television than when you are sleeping. How many of you slept through class in high school and then could remember verbatim what your teacher was talking about?
  6. No Targeted Demographic for Commercials – Sure the television stations will show you demographic charts saying that this age group watches this show and this culture group watches that channel but when the commercials come on all bets are off. Why? Because people do not watch commercials! They use them for television breaks.
  7. Image is Everything – Go big or go home. Unless you are working with about $10,000 the likelihood of you developing a professional ad is not good. If you do not put forward a professional image on the television then the people that you attract will not be the professional type. Only advertise where you can put forth a professional image.
  8. The Internet – Any television show that you want to watch right now, including movies can be found online. The need for watching television is going down drastically. Studies are showing that people are starting to spend more time online than watching t.v. Why? Because online they can both watch their favorite shows (commercial free) and surf simultaneously.
  9. Youtube – If you are dead set on having a commercial then do so via youtube. You can create a goofy commercial and you will generate a ton of hits or you can create a professional commercial and get some good leads. Better yet do a mixture of videos. They are all free (minus your time) and once you upload the video, your advertisement will continue to run 24/7.
