Talk is Cheap

Talk is cheap,” is an old saying that we are all familiar with. This adage like most that have been around for years carry an element of truth that makes them timeless. Let’s analyze. I can remember in high school playing sports and being intimidated and jealous of the people who talked about how good they were in their sport. Upon graduation I listened further to salesmen who told me how good they were at closing sales, Christians who told me how spiritual they were or guys telling me how tough they were. Knowing my personal inadequacies I felt the cringe of intimidation that I was not as good as their heroic facade.

But, several years ago I began to notice the trend that people who talk the most usually do the least. The people who talk about how strong they are and about how many people they beat up, I have found are scared when the occasion calls for courage. I have found that those who boast about their spirituality fail to carry the fruit of the spirit and those who proclaim their wealth are usually in debt. Why do people talk the opposite of their situation, stretch the truth and even sometimes lie to fit in?

As far as I can tell when someone feels inferior to another person in their mist, they attempt to contradict that servile feeling by talking themselves up in the area of their weakness. So if you were around a wealthy man or a man that you perceive to be wealthy and you were not doing well financially you may say something like how good you are doing on your job, how much you were able to save or about the business that you had that was making millions of dollars but how you wanted to get out of it because you didn’t want all of that stress. Or if you were around a great athlete or someone who is in great shape you will talk about your glory days of when you were chiseled like a rock and could run like a gazelle.

In short, “talk is cheap,” instead of telling other people who you used to be or stretching the truth about where you are ask the individual whom you are feeling intimidated by if they could give you some advice in that area. You can either choose to admit that you don’t know for 5 minutes or you can live a lifetime of not knowing. Either way individuals can see through your cover up stories, so you might as well just fess up and get the wisdom that will help you change your insecurity into security.
