“You are the sum total of every decision that you have ever made,” is a phrase that has been coined by many of the great thinkers of the past from Earl Nightengale to Napoleon Hill. Though the phrase is true, its words are hard to accept. Some would argue that this statement is not true because they did not have control over certain elements that they were born into such as: poverty, molestation, broken home and verbal and emotional abuse so how could they possibly be responsible for their present state? I would agree that you are not responsible for what happens to you but you are responsible for how you respond to the events in your life.
As a culture we shun responsibility. If we are late it’s because of traffic, if we have an attitude it’s because we are not feeling well, if we don’t get the raise we wanted it’s because our boss is a jerk and doesn’t appreciate our work ethic. If this seems like your inner conversation you have a cause of excusitis and the only person who believes your excuses is you. Others can see the truth but they don’t tell you. How do I know this? When I hear individuals complain about this manager, that employee, their spouse etc as soon as they walk away I hear others in the group talk about the negative attributes of the complainer.
The only way to change your life is to accept responsibility for the life you are living. If you can’t stand your husband that you picked it’s not his fault and he did not miraculously change overnight while you stayed the perfect angel. If you are overweight its not the fault of your family genes, because your family doesn’t force feed you or keep you from working out. If you hate your job but feel like you cannot leave because of timing, money, benefits etc remember that you are the one who is choosing not to look for other employment either for yourself or another corporation. You have to accept where you before you can move on to where you want to be.
To accept your current lot in life you do not have to go through some ritualistic exercise where you meditate and confess, simply understand the fact that you are where you are because that is where you have chosen to be. Once you realize that you [not God, the devil, your spouse, boss, or genetic makeup] have created through your thoughts and choices the type of lifestyle that you did not want, then you will realize that you can choose the type of lifestyle that you do want. You can choose to loose weight by eating healthier, you can choose to create wealth by curving your spending habits and developing a savings plan, you can choose healthier relationships by cutting off those people who do not edify you. You are in complete control of your life. Accept where you are and then choose to make the changes that will change your life.
