With all of the hype in the media I think that many individuals have a false impression about business. Many people believe if they accumulate a large amount of debt and purchase a storefront then they are in business. I have many friends who operate businesses out of their home and are not taken seriously even though they are way past the average income or lifestyle bracket of the everyday American employee. Another false impression revolving around the world of business is that aspiring entrepreneurs believe if they have the right business model then all they have to do is throw their idea out to the general populace and…presto you are an overnight success with several million dollars in the bank. This is not a belief that businessmen would declare they hold yet, if they do not earn a sizable income in the first couple of years the excuses start rolling in and often the business owners roll out.
Business is Changing
Business is changing. You no longer need a storefront nor in most cases is a storefront necessary. In the majority of cases when you begin a business I do not believe that you should your job. You may have a great business model, an amazing business plan but unfortunately business can be fickle and in the first couple of years when you are learning the trends having a steady, consistent income will help with the stress levels. Keep in mind that this is coming from someone who desperately wants to quit his job, can quit his job, yet understands that things may look great right now but the circumstances can quickly turn and the stresses of “paying the bills” can darken even the brightest of horizons.
The Everyday Entrepreneur
This article is all about the everyday entrepreneur. The individuals who have the talent, the drive, but not necessarily the connections, capital or marketing skills. This article is about people like Wendy Hosch and Renitra Canty and their subject Tatiuana Phillips. Wendy Hosch (the photographer responsible for the above photos) and Renitra Canty (Tatiuana’s makeup artist) are holding down a job in the serving industry, while pursuing their passion and what they feel is their purpose. Wendy and Renitra linked arms and got Tatiuana who is of Russian descent to act as their canvas.
Tatiuana wanted to get her picture taken, Wendy needed a model to shoot with the right look for her portfolio and Renitra needed a model to put makeup on and a photographer to help her build her portfolio. Everyone involved in this project had needs, yet each of their needs feed the needs of the other, therefore they all joined hands and produced a beautiful product as you see above. If Wendy (photographer) did not work with Renitra (makeup artist) then the picture would not have come out as spectacular as it did. They each leverage their talents in order to produce an amazing result.
These ladies are in business, though they are having to work a job in the process. They have a successful business because they are producing a successful product. Their only need at this point is more Tatiuana’s who will pay for their services. Often individuals who are starting business (myself included) have a tendency to compare their progress with others who have experienced a huge amount of success though they have only been in business for a year and then they look at their business and say, “Dang I have been working at this thing for 12 months and I just got my first client.”
The Journey of Success
What you have to remember is that someone may have more “success” than you in a shorter amount of time because they or their family has more connections than you do. For example they start a business tell their mom, dad or a couple of friends and then all of a sudden the thing spreads like wild fire. Well just because that is not your story that does not make you less of a businessman or woman it just means that your journey is different. However, as long as you apply the principles of success your success will be inevitable. My encouragement to you comes in the form of 3 quotes:
- Do not despise small beginnings ~ Bible
- It takes 15 years to become an overnight success ~ Unknown
- I have learned that success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has had to overcome while trying to succeed. ~ Booker T. Washington
