How do you go about planning your day and managing your time when constant interruptions throw off your schedule? Let’s face it life is going to happen whether that day is today or Thursday (pick another day if you are reading this on Thursday). Therefore, when doing your to-do list forget time frames because you will only frustrate yourself.
I use a Franklin Covey to plan my day because the Covey Planner is detailed enough to get the job done but does get too meticulous. On the right side you will notice that you can put your scheduled appointments i.e. meetings and on the left you have your daily task list or in laymen terms your to do list.
Every night before going to bed write down everything that you need to get done on the following day. Then simply go over the list and write A, B or C to the left of each “to-do” item. The reason why you plan at night is because studies have shown that your subconscious mind will work throughout the night planning on how it is going to get everything done. Planning your activities the night before really makes all the difference. Then whatever is left uncompleted on your list carry over until tomorrow’s list.
Remember that a short pencil is better than a long memory. Writing down items that you need to do will cause you to come across more professional and will reduce the amount of stress that is in your life. Not to mention you will find out how much time you really do have. Try managing your time through scheduling and planning consistently for one week and you will understand what I mean.
