Without exception we all fail. Sometimes those failures are more public other times you are the only person who will ever know but we all fail. Now that does not make the process any more enjoyable however take comfort in the fact that you are not alone in your journey. When I was 23, I was given the opportunity to make a giant leap forward, when I was given the opportunity to purchase an arena football team. And though I was fearful about making the leap…I did it. However, after a short lived success the business failed…I mean the thing fell like a brick out of the sky. And when I had lost the football team, I lost everything…including confidence.
Personal Bankruptcy Takes More than the Creditors Away
The financial pressures were so great that I had to file personal bankruptcy and though it alleviated the financial pressures the process caused something much deeper…insecurity. When you file personal bankruptcy the government takes your debts and makes them disappear, they force your creditors to leave you alone and stop calling you but what they do not tell you is that more than your credit score they take your pride.
Though you only spend roughly an hour in humiliation, where a judge questions your financial stability, savvy and intellect; and where creditors can come in and ask you why you did not pay them, you will spend the next several years being reminded of your financial mistake. When you go to apply for a credit card, car loan, mortgage, insurance or even a new an account with the electric company your personal bankruptcy shows and you are reminded of your failure once again. You quickly learn that you are now a risk…
Reminding You of Failure
Each time you have to suffer from a higher interest rate, a large deposit, or when the person from across the desk asks your social security number, run the reports and then give you that look…you are reminded of your failure. I can remember about a year after I was forced to file personal bankruptcy I was studying to be a financial advisor, because I had a passion to help others create wealth and avoid the same mistakes that I had made. I had spent my entire savings paying my way through getting the licensing, training etc and then came the moment just before they were getting ready to sign me onto the company…the credit check. Turns out that you cannot be a financial advisor with a bankruptcy that is so new on your record…translation to me…you failed. The failure took another pound of confidence away…
Then I lost my home resulting from an adjustable mortgage that adjusted and costing me an additional $700 per month that I could not afford or refinance because of my personal bankruptcy…another pound of confidence chipped away. However, time does pass and wounds do heal yet if you carefully dissect the situation, your emotions and the nuggets of truth regarding your situation you will come away a far better man or woman. Here is how I overcame my personal bankruptcy…
How StevenRoddy.com Overcame Personal Bankruptcy
I accepted it. I stopped justifying why I failed, my credit score, or why I could not get a loan.
Then I forgave. I forgave the people in my life who treated me differently due to my bankruptcy and I forgave God for seemingly allowing the bankruptcy to happen and then I forgave only true person at fault…me.
Lastly, I moved on. I began taking the nuggets of truth that I learned and actually wrote a book. Then I began this website to help other people be successful in their business and in their life. I decided to give of myself to others and the rewards have been tremendous. I began this site a little over a year ago and now business from this site has increased exponentially and now I am helping small business owners market their websites online. Within one month I will be working for myself full-time, while making more money and working less hours than I ever have before. You can recover from your personal bankruptcy and find the success that you seek.
Purpose Discovery Questions
I recommend signing up for my free, “Purpose Discovery Course,” located on the homepage. This course will take you through the questions that I asked myself in order to get me onto the right track. However, be patient with yourself if you are just overcoming a personal bankruptcy. My journey of getting back on my feet took about three years but hopefully my, “Purpose Discovery Course,” will jump start your journey and decrease the time.
I want to leave you with this nugget. I realized about 4 months ago that I was miserable. I did not have peace. And I was living in the minds of other people. I came to the realization that I was lacking self belief and confidence in my ability to succeed. I decided to make some painful personal changes in my life that involved cutting out some people that I loved and still love because the environment was not conducive to my growth at that time. However the time alone has proven invaluable because the time in solitude enabled me to fall in love with my attributes once again. When you can look yourself in the mirror and be proud of the man or woman whom you have become, regardless of what you own or your credit score, then you are a success and you have truly overcome your bankruptcy.
My Definition of Success
My personal definition of success: taking, confident, progressive, daily steps toward fulfilling your God given purpose without measuring your talents, position or possessions to that of others.
Wishing you great success…

Thanks for the recovery story. We are dealing with the same financial crisis ourselves and trying to make some huge decisions. I appreciate you and your witness. You are truly a remarkable man. I hope you are well. If you have any other advice for someone in a huge financial crisis, please send it all. Be blessed.
I really enjoyed your story. I can definitely relate as I just had to file for personal bankruptcy. I lost many so called “friends” in the process. Thanks for the article.
That sucks…I had no idea
Great article…sounds like you have been through some shit! I had a friend who went through bankruptcy several years ago though he does not seem to be recovering as nicely. I will send him the link to this article.

I thing the statement I had to forgive God is a foolish one. You make it seem like God made a mistake. He is witout sin. We make the mistakes by not letting him lead us in everything we do. The scriptures say “In all thy ways acknowledge him and he shall direct thy path” Proverbs 3:6.
I love this blog. Thanks for the great information. I have it bookmarked and will be back. If anybody needs new credit file number don’t hesitate to come on over.
