Old Habits Die Hard

bill miner, wild west, outlaw, rober

In 1901 Bill Miner got out of the San Quentin Prison where he had served a total of 33 years. The two times prior when he was freed he would go right back to robbing and stealing. Bill Miner was a Wild West Legend who robbed his first stagecoach at the age 16 and coined the infamous phrase, “Hands up!”

When Miner got out of prison in 1901 he was 58 years old. Age had caught up with Bill, the black hair turned gray, friends had either been killed or disappeared and the stagecoaches were now steam trains something that he had never seen. For these reasons Bill attempted a new life working various jobs, but most of the work seemed underpaid, dull and boring compared to his former lifestyle.

One afternoon, while in Seattle, Miner watched, “The Great Train Robbery,” and rediscovered his old passion. He would take his old stagecoach tactics and translate them into robbing steam trains. And so he did. Bill successfully robbed 6 known steam trains, and possibly many others, before being tracked down in British Columbia.

So why do I tell this story? More than likely you have a desire for something to change in your life such as more money, a healthier lifestyle, or better relationships. Therefore you attempt to change and successfully do so for a couple of days or weeks and then something happens and you find yourself traveling back down the road that you tried to turn from.

Your mind is a thermostat that adjusts your life to the temperature of your beliefs. If things are going worse than what you believe you are worthy of your life will turn on the heater to make things better. If things are going better than you believe possible the air conditioner will turn on and your actions will soon bring your lifestyle down to what you feel is normal for your life. We have all came across some money, promotion, demotion, a bad relationship or good one that caused our life to swing out of balance for the good or bad only to correct itself with time.

So how do you change your mindset to keep the positive in your environment? As a parent who closely watches their children by a busy street so you must keep constant watch on your thoughts…in the beginning. Once the habit is formed you will be on cruise control. When you notice a negative thought entering into your mind speak a positive phrase to counteract the negativity. Overtime you will transform the way you think and the life that you live.
