How to Set a Goal

a98 How to Set a Goal

The reason people with goals succeed is because they know where they are going. Most people do not know where they want to go or how they want to end up. In fact the only thing they do know is that they do not want what they now have. Which is a job, that they hate, paying them a salary, that after groceries, gas and taxes there might be enough left to catch a movie…at the dollar theatre. So how do you sitting there watching this web-cast change all of that? Goals. Pin point, with dates attached that lead you in a direction that fulfills the destiny in which God created you for.

When one doesn’t have goals he produces results like a dropped lemon meringue pie – they splatter over everything but hit nothing very hard. There is nothing special about a goal. All you need is a piece of paper, a pen and your brain. But, what a goal does for you is extraordinary. A goal will cause you to stay focused in a society that pulls you in every direction, begs for your attention and then drops you at the drop of a hat.

You have got to stay focused. Much like the cat that is waiting…watching the bird in the low bush. Every muscle, all of the attention that the cat could give is focused on one thing and that one thing only…capturing its next meal. Strategically, the cat waits, creeps then waits without moving a muscle until the opportunity is perfect to pounce, full force with all the energy and determination without thinking of failure.

Now think. What do you want? What makes you want to sit up in your seat and focus with laser beam intensity on that one thing until nothing else matters except capturing that goal. Until you have found that you have not begun living. You will sacrifice sleep, money and emotion for its fulfillment. Let your mind explore its options and then go after what you believe you can do, not something that you think your friends or enemies would be impressed with. You can go deeper. Filtered out the expectations of others… What do you want?

Now I want you to think about this before we go any further…there will be some people who go to their grave thinking if only I would have gave my business idea a chance; if only I would have written that book, traveled to that country, said I love you to that girl. Now I am not trying to get you depressed but you or I could have those exact same regrets when we find ourselves at the end of our life. We always say, “Tomorrow I will take action. Tomorrow I will go on the diet.” And the list goes one but one day we are not going to have another tomorrow to procrastinate to. And I do not know about you but I intend to live my life to the fullest.

And setting goals is how we begin to live that life. For the purpose of time I am only going to focus on two of the four goal setting strategies. First if you have not done so already set your yearly goals. And as you do keep these 3 guidelines in your mind: Don’t bite off more than you can chew, Be specific, and When are you going to accomplish each goal?  Remember there is no such thing as an unrealistic goal, only unrealistic timeframes. Now I want you to review your yearly goals on a monthly basis because we are going to create monthly goals that will aid you in the accomplishment of your yearly goals.

Now I want you to get a note card or cut a piece of computer paper into note card size and on the back of that card write the phrase, “I possess all the power I need inside of me and as long as I stay focused I shall have what I decree.” And on the front write a significant step that you are going to take toward your yearly goal this month. When you write that goal, write it as though you have already achieved it and then decree that goal in the morning when you wake up and at night just before you go to bed this will remind you of your commitment to yourself and will keep you focused. Again make sure that you do not bite off more than you can chew and be specific.
