David Steel is the author of “The Care and Feeding of Highly Aggressive Sales People,” an Amazon bestseller, and I can tell you personally that he is a man who takes initiative. So you might ask yourself, what in the world does selling have to do with becoming a famous actor?
Selling is Everything
Well, I posed that question to David also and his reply was the same as mine…EVERYTHING.
If you cannot sell yourself than you will not have an audience. If you do not have an audience than you do not have fame. You are a product. And just like any product that turns into a household brand name people need to be able to find value (entertainment, educational, or emotional) in it.
David is a motivational speaker and author who is known for being able to maximize sales teams. Which makes his message awesome for you because if you can mobilize a sales force i.e. your fans, than they will sell you straight to fame and Hollywood!
How to Connect With Fans Through Social Media
What drew me to David was his methods of connecting with people via social media and then pulling them out of the computer and into his life. How does he do that? He takes initiative by actively and creatively leveraging social media. Once David is connected with someone on social media he will offer them a free product. That free product will then pull people out of the social media sphere and into his life…because his social media fans will have to give him their email address in order to obtain the free product.
Once David captures their email address they are out of the social media sphere and become more into his personal space. But, before you can really experience the impact of social media you need numbers. And for that David leverages Tweetadder. One of the dirty little secrets of social media is that you have to actively go out and grab people to become part of your world. Tweetadder is a paid service, though its not much and is the best service of its kind on the market, you can also leverage a free website as explained in “How to Leverage Twitter to Become Famous.”
This is where I am going to pick up in our interview:
Become a Famous Actor
Steven: How important is sales as it relates to success and eventual fame?
David: Selling is everything! Before Brad Pitt was Brad Pitt he had to sell himself to producers and directors. He had to play in a lot of crappy movies until he got noticed. Then someone saw him, gave him a bigger opportunity and then his career continued to grow to what it is today. But, at every level of his career he had to sell. Now, all of his past work, and his fans are doing the selling for him. This is the process of success in any industry…especially entertainment.
How to Sell Yourself to Success
Steven: When you are leveraging yourself to the status of celebrity you have to balance selling yourself and selling a product. How were you able to sell yourself to the level of success that you are now?
David: To be honest I had an advantage…I had starting capital. So what I did was fly out to California and hired a company to film me speaking. This became my calling card and gave me something to sell. By creating this product of me speaking I had created the ability for somebody to hire me. This of course is translated into an acting reel, website or a demo CD for the people whom are trying to tap into the music and movie business. In order to sell yourself you have to have something that gives you credibility.
Never Give Out Your Information
Steven: Do you have any parting words of advice for the individuals desiring to become famous?
David: Always be in control of your business. I never give out my business card when I speak. I get their business card. This way I am in control of the follow up and I stay in control of my business. Do not rely on someone else to make you a success, take the initiative, take control.
