Laying off, firing or terminating an employee can be the most difficult event in any business. And though this is just a necessary part of business it is also kind of unfair. For example, an employee has to give a 2-week notice before they leave yet when they do more often than not they are let go early. However, a boss can fire the employee on the spot, without warning, putting them in a really tight situation. So here are 3 steps to take that will soften the blow.
- The Compliment Oreo – Compliment, correct, compliment. The process really does work if you are sincere.
- Stick to the Facts – Clearly articulate why you are firing them. Not in a downgrading way, let’s face it you firing them will hurt badly enough. But, if they failed to meet your expectations then tell them why.
- Give them Options – In my last business I had to fire several of my employees but before I did I took some time to get them leads into other companies and in some cases job interviews. Why did I do that when I am firing them? I knew that they were not all bad, just bad for my company but after working with them I had an idea of what their strengths were.
Of course there are other circumstances where you would not want to recommend the employee, as in the case of my secretary who stole $10,000…she did not get recommended.
