Before you can sell anything you first have to know to whom you are selling. Makes sense right? You would be amazed by the amount of people whom I ask, “Who is your demographic? Who are you marketing too?” Their brilliant response…
Everyone.
Let’s think this through. Who does McDonald’s, arguably the most successful franchise, sell to?
Everyone? Correct. They are not going to turn away business.
Who do they market to?
Everyone? False.
Their entire marketing strategy involves kids! That is the point of Ronald McDonald, the Happy Meal with the toys and their infamous playland. But, who has kids?
Everyone!
Therefore, they market to the kids but because kids cannot drive and purchase their own food, McDonald’s then by default attracts parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and…you guessed it KIDS!
You have got to narrow down your demographic if you want success in attracting customers. You have to know to whom you are marketing. The best demographic format that I have found so far is on myspace.com. Go into the search for friends tab and in there you can get real specific about race, income, height, etc. Now depending on your business you may not have to go that specific but Myspace will really help you generate some ideas to narrow down your demographic search.
