How to Develop a Dance Studio

As I was reviewing the comments on my youtube videos I noticed that one woman left a comment asking my advice. I thought that her question and my answer might be of assistance in helping you in your business venture/idea. Below is her comment:

I have visited a lot of video’s but I really dig your, smooth, concise & to the point. Nice job. My reason for looking up how to video’s is to start a business. In a nutshell, we are 12 ladies with a urban line dancing group. We are very passionate, get together one a week, for 1 1/2 hrs & dance. Slowing people started coming, from everywhere, we charge a fee, and instruct by teaching dances. Where do we go from here? A business, group or organization, what? How do we protect our name? Help!

My Response:

Before you can go anywhere you first need to know where you are going. Do you want to incorporate a workout with your dances? Do you want to choreography for music artists, musical events? Do you want to create instructional videos that will teach people how to dance inside the comfort of their homes? Create a clothing line? A record label? Begin to hire song writers? The possibilities are really pretty endless but the direction of your business (it’s already a business because it’s making money) all depends on how big you wish your company to grow.

The three practical steps I would take if in your situation would be

  1. Survey your clients – Do not assume you know what they want but do not get their advice for free. Offer them a free session in exchange for their participation in the survey. If they are getting something they will feel more obligated to putĀ  some thought into the questions.
  2. Get a commitment – I would charge a monthly fee if at all possible therefore you have guaranteed income but check the results of the survey to determine what they want.
  3. Write a business plan – Start with the end in mind. If you cannot articulate on paper where you are going then your business will grow to mediocre at best.

To protect your name you first need to know if the business name is taken and you can do that online. Then you need to get a business license to protect that name. I hope that this information helps you launch a successful business. Keep me updated on your progress.
