We have all been there. We need more business, we are at home brainstorming how do I get more business and then ideas come along such as radio advertisement, give-a-ways, promotions etc. However in brainstorming sessions such as these we often miss the most important, practical and inexpensive way to advertise our business…talk about it!…to people!…today!
Get out of the house, go to a mall, coffee shop or grocery store and talk to people. Strike up a conversation about nothing but with purpose. If the person whom you begin conversing with is not a jerk then pop the question, “So did you have the day off or did you have to work today?” or “What do you do for a living?” and then listen, compliment and ask questions about their occupation. When you show interest in people they will out of respect show interest in you and will more than likely ask you, “What you do for a living?” and then what do you say…I own a roofing company, I own a landscaping business or I am a salesman.
If you answer like that you have just missed your window of opportunity. Why? Because you stopped talking about them. When you first meet someone if you want to be interesting, even when you are talking about you, talk about you in terms of them. Here are some practical examples of how to talk about them when you are talking about you:
When someone asks you what you do for a living…
If you have a lawncare business say, “I help homeowners create award winning lawns.”
If you own a roofing restoration company say, “I help homeowners get free roofs paid for by their insurance companies.”
If you are a car saleswoman say, “I help individuals find their dream car at their dream price.”
When you talk using this type of terminology your audience is no longer thinking about what you do for a living, they are thinking…hey I need a dream car, or I need a new roof or my lawn looks like crap and I want my yard to be green like Mr. Smith’s house. All of a sudden you have a potential client or someone who knows a potential client. When they come to the conclusion on their own that you could help them, you have a client and more business.
Does this sound easy? Good because promoting your business is easy…you just need to get out of your house and start talking.
