I purchased a book called “Eccentric Epitaphs,” written by Michelle Lovric because I think that what a person says about their life after they are dead can be insightful. With this in mind I wanted to share with you some of my favorite headstone sayings that those who have passed on has passed on.
Alexander the Great (356 – 323BC)
“Here a mound suffices for one whom the world was not large enough”
Lillingham, Dorset
“I poorly lived, I poorly died, and when I was buried nobody cried”
On a 2 Week Old Baby
“Came in, looked about; didn’t like it, went out.”
On a Man Who Was Scalded to Death
“Sacred to the memory of our ‘steamed friend.”
In Yorkshire
“Here lies my poor wife, without bed or blanket, but dead as a door-nail, God be thanked.”
In Paris, France
“I am anxiously expecting you” – AD 1827 “Here I am” – AD 1867
In Eastwell churchyard, Kent
“Fear God, Keep the commandments, and Don’t attempt to climb a tree, for that’s what caused the death of me”
Dorothy Parker (1893-1967)
“Excuse my Dust”
