friendship quotes

While attending Bible College I met a very wealthy to whom I became friends with. Over lunch one day I asked him if he was happy to which he replied, “No, and I probably never will be.” I was floored how could this man with all of his material wealth, contacts and influence be dissatisfied? I will never forget his answer to the “why” question that I asked. He said, “I don’t have anyone that I can honestly call my friend. I don’t know whether or not the people in my life are around because of what I have or who I am.” Then he proceeded to tell me that if I was able to find one true friend (he emphasised before I obtained wealth) then I would be the richest man in the world because that is something the wealthy can ever know for sure.

In light of my friend’s wisdom I share with you these friendship quotes:

“Good friends share good times, but great friends divide pain.” ~ Michelle C Ustaszeski

Once Winston Churchill received an invitation from George Bernard Shaw to one of his opening plays back in the early 1900s. The note read, “Enclosed are two tickets to the performance of a play of mine. Bring a friend – if you have one.” Churchill sent back this reply: “Dear GBS, I thank you very much for the invitation and tickets. Unfortunately, I am engaged on that night, but could I have tickets for the second night? – if there is one.” ~ Jerry L. Schmalenberger, When Christians Quarrel, Jerry L. Schmalenberger

A British publication once offered a prize for the best definition of a friend. Among the thousands of answers received were the following:
”One who multiplies joys, divides grief, and whose honesty is inviolable.”
”One who understands our silence.”
”A volume of sympathy bound in cloth.”
”A watch that beats true for all time and never runs down.”
The winning definition read: “A friend is the one who comes in when the whole world has gone out.” ~ Bits & Pieces, July, 1991.

“A friend is one who warns you.” ~ Old Jewish proverb

“Some people make enemies instead of friends because it is less trouble.” ~ E.C. McKenzie

“Friendship is born at that moment when one person says to another, “What! You, too? I thought I was the only one.”" ~ C.S. Lewis

“Friends are like good health; you don’t realize what a gift they are until you lose them.” ~ Unknown

“Prosperity begets friends, adversity proves them.” ~ Unknown
