Do you tip on the tax for a dinner out

Do you tip on the tax for a dinner out? When a restaurant automatically adds the gratuity to your bill it will do so before taxes, therefore you do not have to tip your waiter or waitress after the tax on the bill. However, servers have to tip out busers, bartenders, food runners and other staff members (in some cases) and are expected to tip out based on after tax dollars. Because of this fact they will look for you to tip them out based on post tax amounts.

Why does this matter? Your server has the ability to make your experience joyful or let’s just say memorable. A friend of mine has a saying that applies to employees in the fast food arena, “Never make someone mad who is making minimum wage and dealing with your food.” Servers make $2.13 per hour plus tips and though you should never tip out of fear you should tip based on service. After all you did just spend $15 on a meal that you could have made for $3 at home so a couple of extra dollars to ensure quality service for the next time that you come in could only increase your chances of a pleasurable experiences in the future.

The same server that can remember your order without writing it down will be able to remember the face of an individual that did not leave them a good tip and will spread the word the next time you come in.
