The acting business is an extremely competitive market however Mike Pniewski has been successfully working as an actor for the past 20 years. Starring in films with Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington and acting in Ray, A Time to Kill, CSI: Miami, Law and Order and many more. Mike Pniewski is now using the success strategies that he learned in the acting business to help entrepreneurs experience the success that they seek.
StevenRoddy.com: How has your success in acting enabled you to coach entrepreneurs to success?
Mike: Being an actor is a business and the acting business is extremely competitive as 98% of all actors earn less than $15 thousand per year. As an actor I am an independent business owner, who must market, brand and sell my product (me) to sell that product (me) during auditions and then deliver that service to the client (the writer, producer & director). In order to get them to purchase your product you have to have determination, commitment, savvy and a sophisticated business mind. Without these key qualities you cannot be a successful actor or entrepreneur.
StevenRoddy.com: What do you find is the most common problem that you run into when coaching entrepreneurs?
Mike: Without a doubt lack of information is the number one problem. When I speak with entrepreneurs I can most often easily identify a goal, and the dream that they have in their hearts but what they lack are the tools and information to get them to their desired outcome.
The second most common problem is fear. What entrepreneurs need to understand is that fear is natural. You do not know what to expect therefore you get nervous and feel fear. But you are also fearful because you give a damn.
However, fear can be overcome by gratitude. When I head into an audition that is naturally a very intense moment, I focus on being grateful for the opportunity to audition and grateful for the chance to do what I love. Then the fear becomes manageable or goes away entirely. In the book, “What Happy People Know,” they cite a study where it was scientifically proven that fear and gratitude cannot exist in the human body simultaneously. So, its not just me saying it, this has been proven to be true.
The lesson is – get the right tools and information then be grateful for the opportunities that come your way.
StevenRoddy.com: Is there a common characteristic in successfully ran organizations?
Mike: I have found that there are 3 common characteristics in successful businesses. The leaders of successful businesses possess self-belief. They believe that I am a success right now, not when I get this client or that new business. Then they instill that same self belief in their people.
Secondly, they are efficient and organized. And thirdly they have a well-defined mission statement that keeps them and their energy focused.
StevenRoddy.com: What advice can you give the entrepreneur who is overwhelmed by the everyday tasks of running a business, and is not earning the kind of money that he or she wants to earn?
Mike: Ask for help. Never be afraid to ask for help. Your level of success is directly related to your willingness to ask for help.
Get out of your comfort zone. You are more than likely too comfortable in your processes – change them. Change the look of your business, change your offers, and reinvent yourself. In order to see a change you are going to have to make a change.
Look at the people who you are working with. Is your team supporting your mission? Are they adding value to your organization?
Lastly, overcome your fear of the unknown. Do not be afraid to change. If what you are doing is not working then change it. After all is it more important to be successful or to be right?
