5 Steps to Setting and Achieving a Goal

a99 5 Steps to Setting and Achieving a Goal

There is nothing common or small about setting goals. In fact, those who set goals are the top income earners in America and throughout the world, as shown through the Harvard Study that I spoke about at my last speaking engagement in Atlanta, GA. It could be concluded from this study that 95% of parents do not sit their children down and teach them the importance of having a goal and how to set one. I know that my parents did not sit me down and have a 3-step process on how to set a goal, however, they did show me at least on an annual basis the effects of what setting a goal could do, when they set a date  Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Every year without fail my parents would set a goal that they were going to go to the beach in the summer. My mom would mark off the date on the calendar and then make the reservation for the condo or house on the beach. And every year, regardless of how much money my parents made (and let me tell you they we not necessarily bringing in the bacon.) we always had enough money to go to the beach. Always. I can hear your thoughts, “Big deal, so your parents made enough money to go to the beach.” No, it is not about the vacation. The big deal is the fact that there was 6 kids and 2 adults, one of those adults stayed at home and at one point my dad was making 5.15 per hour and we were struggling not to be on welfare! That is huge b/c if they could overcome tremendous odds to go on an annual vacation what could you do with you life pursuit? Everything you need to know about setting a goal can be found in my parents strategy for the beach.

  1. Set a date: they said we are going to go on this date, and then my dad made my mom make the reservation, and they did not always have the money when they made the reservation but by the time the date came the money had always arrived.
  2. Be Specific: they knew exactly where they were going. They were going to a particular address in Myrtle Beach, S.C. And they set a goal to go to the beach, not to raise the money needed to go to the beach. Often times we set goals trying to get what we think we need in order to get our goal when actually we should go after what we want and then what we need will come automatically
  3. Believe: My parents knew that they were going to the beach. They did not know how they were going to make it there but they always knew that they were going to the beach. There was not a shadow of doubt in their mind. Set goals that you believe will come true. There are no limits. Whether you believe for big or small there are no limits if you do not limit yourself. As the book the Secret says it is just as easy to manifest $1 as it is to manifest $1,000,000
  4. Why: Know why you are believing for what you are believing. When times get tough and the goal seems hard to reach you have got to have a good understanding of why you are shooting for what you are shooting for. My dad thought that the yearly time together developed unity, bonding and love in our family and that was what kept him motivated.
  5. Detours: Sometimes on our way to the beach we ran into road construction, detours and traffic which slowed and delayed the process however, we did not lose hope turn the car around and say well maybe we will have better luck next year. Nope, we just bared the traffic, followed the signs and waited on the construction workers because my parents knew that they had come this far and they were going to see the beach. Delayed does not mean denied. Don’t give up on yourself.

I admonish you if you have not taken the time to create your yearly goals that you do so. It could and will change you life.
