Why should we create a goal? Anything focused has greater power. Turn a water hose from mist to stream and people are jumping out of the way. Focus the sunlight through a magnifying glass and you are not getting a sun tan you are catching things on fire. Likewise when we focus the mind to accomplish a particular task we will be more apt to achieve it. Have you every heard someone say, “Someday, I am going to fix that, do this…” and the list continues. Do they ever? Well, I guess we really do not know because when is someday?
Here are 5 reasons why people do not write goals:
Do not know they should – (No one ever set them down and explained “why.”) When your life is falling apart your instinct does not say let me grab a pen and paper to find out what it is that I want. Your thoughts go toward survival.
Do not know how – Some of you out there heard about goals and said I should write some goals down. But, then you begin to think should I write down weekly? Daily? or yearly goals? I hear the Chinese write out 100-year goals, how do you even begin to do that?
Do not want to fail – I have heard people tell me that they do not want to get disappointed if they miss their goal.
Procrastination – I will do it tomorrow. The funny thing is you never feel like doing some tasks but we keep putting them off hoping that the problems will solve themselves and just go away. As one man said, “The more you wait, the more you feel the weight.”
Do not understand the power – Out of them all I think that this is the big one. If we truly understood the power that lies within making a small commitment to ourselves and to our dreams that nothing in this world could stop you I do not think that we would have a problem with the other four. An interesting correlation is that less than 5% of the population has a written goal with a date attached, and 95% of the world’s wealth is in the hands of about 5% of the people. Just some food for thought.
Once we understand that a goal is not equivalent to a rabbit’s foot and realize how they work we will not want to go another day without one
