How do you advertise your small business in a bad economy when money is tight? O.k. so the economy has tanked, your customers are holding onto their money yet you need their money to survive. But, how do you spend money to advertise to get them to come into your store to spend money when there is little or nothing left in the bank?
Here are 5 ways to advertise your business for free:
Press Release – Come up with something news worthy and write a press release and then send it to the newspapers and news stations. All newspapers have a section talking about press releases and will print your release at no cost.
Shared Advertising – Link arms with a related business whom you could drive business their way while they drive customers back to you. For example if you had a hardware store partner with a couple of contractors and whenever you have a customer who needs a repair refer his work, and whenever the contractor has a job he will purchase all of his supplies from your store. This type of deal can work in most every business.
News Interview – Call your local news station and asked to be interviewed on the evening news. You have to have something that the general public would be interested in (hint: What did you talk about in your press release?) but if you have that most of the time you can get in their free or deeply discounted. After all they need the ratings and you need the exposure.
Trade Out – Do you have a service that you could offer to a local media outlet for free in exchange for advertising? Of course you do but you will have to use your imagination and some persistence to get the trade out done.
Customer Service – The greatest free advertising is word of mouth. What are you doing to “WOW” your customer? If you are not your competitor is.
