4 Steps to Direct Marketing Like Officemax

After rolling out of  bed this morning around 2pm…just kidding more like 9 I decided to go out and check my mail. When I opened up my mailbox I noticed this huge brown paper bag inside of my mailbox. The curiosity of course got the best of me and I looked to see why and the heck there was a big paper bag in my mailbox.

Turns out Officemax is running a slick little direct mail campaign in order to advertise a big sale they are having. I like the Officemax marketing technique for 4 different reasons:

  1. Unique – It’s not everyday when you open up your mailbox and see a brown paper bag.
  2. Inexpensive - Brown paper bag advertising does not cost a lot, nor do you have to pay for color ink to make the paper stand out because the bag does the trick without any help.
  3. Cost Effective – This marketing technique is cost effective because the Officemax customers who use the bag to claim their 20% will walk out with the same bag and their goodies. Meaning Officemax does not have to pay more money for more bags.
  4. Traceability – When the customer brings in the bag to purchase the product Officemax knows that the customer heard about the sale through their direct marketing campaign. This way they know where they are experiencing a return on their advertising dollar.
